Our environmental Project - Do it Right.
We have invested in a total of 1.8 million in upgrading our water treatment and meeting DEQ discharge limits:
Da Yang Seafood (DYS) is committed to complying with all environmental regulations. Because of short comings in the past, we have contracted the services of Aqua-Terra Consultants (ATC), the experts in seafood processing environmental services. They have audited the facility, prepared an Environmental Management System Handbook, and trained plant personnel. They are also assisting in reviewing monthly monitoring requirements and reports.
Despite installing the same wastewater treatment technology as all the other processors in Oregon, meeting the current limits remains a challenge. DEQ has issued fines to DYS and all the processors for not meeting the limits. These are based on EPA limits developed in the 70’s using technologies that are outdated. At that time, it was acceptable to add chemicals to the wastewater and render the recovered solids for animal feeds. Today, no one wants chemicals in their feed or food. EPA and DEQ will need to resolve the gap between the limits based on recommended technologies that are no longer environmentally sound.
We also requested that ATC evaluate the impact of our current discharge on the Columbia River, the receiving environment. Based on plant data and data available in the public domain for the receiving environment, ATC concluded that the current discharge is not having a harmful effect on the Columbia River.
In light of above challange, we have retained ATC to bench test innovative technologies to further recover seafood solids from the wastewater. This work is ongoing. No waste, is our goal. We want to recover more product and by-product and not treat the wastewater in a way that creates toxic or hazardous waste (which would be the result if the EPA recommended technologies in the 70’s were implemented today).
